Seriously, Final Four?

March 22, 2009 by Camille 1 Comment

Like many people across America, I am excited that March Madness has begun.  I have filled out brackets with a few different groups of friends and family.  I am currently part of a bracket group that Brandi and her husband Travis set up.  Travis posted a comment about Brandi, which is the reason for this post.  Brandi picked BYU to make it to the final four in the NCAA tournament.  Now, I know Brandi is now a true blue BYU fan, but seriously the final four?  They aren’t that good.  After all the lost to San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference last weekend.  I’ll admit that I picked BYU to make it past the first round, but quickly learned my lesson when the lost to Texas A&M.  In fact, of all the years for Brandi to come out as a BYU fan, this wasn’t the year to do it.  Utah dominated the football field, and conquered the basketball court.  So I have to ask again.  Final four, seriously?

I was shocked with Brandi’s selection, I would never pick a team to go to the final 4 that hadn’t won a game in the Big Dance since 1993. However, that is why I love Brandi. Her picks are based completely off of her emotions, that is why she beats me every year.

Utah conquered the basketball court? First off I don’t think you can say Utah dominated the basketball court. I will give you football, but BYU beat Utah by 13 at home and barely lost to Utah on the road in overtime. We tied for the regular season conference, and BYU ended up as the top seed in the MWC tournament because of the tiebreakers that went into effect. Looking back I wish we would have gone into the tournament as the 2nd seed like Utah. They had such an easy path to the title it was ridiculous. Utah barely beat a horrible TCU team in the first round. Then Wyoming knocked off New Mexico in the first round which created an easy match up with Wyoming, a team that was thrilled to get 1 win in the tournament. Then you faced a tired San Diego in the championship. BYU had an easy game against Air Force, (although it was closer than I would have liked) then played a motivated San Diego State team that was playing for a birth in the NCAA tournament. Then we had to watch a completely different, exhausted San Diego State team lose to you guys in the final. I wish we could have played in the final because I have no doubt we would have beat the utes again.

Utah proved to be the most overrated team in the tournament this year. Many people were saying that Arizona didn’t even belong in the tournament. How did they prove they belong? Beat Utah in the first round. I think that may have been the most embarrassing loss in the history of the MWC. Dr. Chris Hill gives the U an incredible, un-warranted, 5 seed and the U chokes it away. I wish we could get our athletic Director on the selection committee so we could get a better seed. We got an 8 seed again, which is historically the worst seed to receive in the tournament. The 8 has a losing record to the 9 seed in the tournament. Granted, BYU did not show up to play in that game and should be embarrassed by their performance as well. At least Utah didn’t do anything really bad like lose to a Division 2 team, oh wait, I forgot that Southwest Baptist beat Utah on their home floor to start the year. So if having an extremely embarrassing loss to start the year and end the year is conquering the basketball court, I would have to say no thanks.

My favorite part of the tournament so far is hearing all of the U fans make fun of BYU fans for their loss, before they lost to Arizona a day later. It is just like dirty utes to speak too early.

Sorry for the long comment, I am just so excited for this website. There is nothing like Rivalry Smack to get my blood boiling and make me post long comments in response to a harmless post about Brandi’s picks in the tournament. All you had to do to rile me up is throw a little jab in on the Cougars at the end of your post, what has this rivalry done to me?
